Are our buildings Earthquake proof

Got this news here and was wondering how well protected are we? 8.0 mag was in 1812 and expected 2 years.

The good news is many renters insurance policies in NJ still include provisions for earthquakes; the bad news is Newport was not built to withstand a significant earthquake. However, the likelihood of an earthquake happening in this area is probably minuscule.

I had the misfortune of experiencing an earthquake over 30 years ago in Puerto Rico. It was a low magnitude quake that threw me across the room. I literally flew across the room and was lucky to grab onto a metal stand that saved my life. Very scary.

Sonia it is akin to attitude in Haiti or India where every one had been unprepared. Good,well to do people , kids died also as their building was not resilience enough. Earthquakes are rare BUT it is due every 200 years in east cost(last came 1800). Does Newport rentals have any civil engineering update etc to state the earth quake resilience of building for ritcher scale of 7 or less.

Are the new buildings coming up are ? If I am to settle here for next 30-40 years I would definitely like to eliminate this risk for the family.

I don't think any developer would raise their construction cost, probably by a great factor, in order to build an earthquake-proof building, unless it is required by law.
Shore towers were built right on top of the Holland Tunnel, south tower is directly across from the tunnel's exhaust vent. That poses a more realistic threat, in my opinion.

You are committing a gambler's fallacy. When it is said that earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 happen once every 200 years, it doesn't mean that they happen every 200 years, perfectly on schedule. It means that the probability of such an earthquake is 0.5% in any given year. If we've had 200 years without earthquakes, good for us. It doesn't mean that one is coming around the corner, on average the next earthquake will happen in 2210. I hope you can rest easy now.

Yes, the worst quake in U.S. history was exactly 200 years ago but it was along the Missippi in the then, Louisiana Territory. It IS likely to occur again with ferocity but as PTMG said, maybe tomorrow, maybe in 100 years, but it will happen in the vicinity of Memphis and St. Louis, far, far away.

All we have is a piddling little fault known as the Ramapo Fault which breaks the occasional dish with a 3.0 on the Richter.

A bigger worry living in a Newport apartment is freezing to death or having your bank account attached by PSE&G.
