Pope John was a rare human being in that he was a great humanitarian, who loved all of us equally. I had the opportunity to see him when he came to New York in 1995, and drove through Manhattan in his Pope mobile. I was struck by the sense that he was looking straight at me, and I at him, despite the thousands of people in the crowd. That was part of his magic: he had a gift to make us feel a direct connection to him. So, as saddened as I feel by his death, I know the Angels in heaven are welcoming him, and he is smiling.

I had the good fortune of seeing the Pope during one of my trips to Rome. He was an extraordinary individual with a radiance about him, very much above the mundane. He left an incredible impression on me. The world has lost a living Saint.

So farewell then, John Paul II,
I hear you were from Poland,
But your name isn't very Polish.
It sounds more like the name of a Beatles revival band.
