In case you're interested, I picked up a PSP at Target this morning before going to work. Most places were not even taking preorders since the demand is so high, but I just walked in and bought it without hassel. There were maybe about 20 people or so there, and they said they have something like 50 or so in stock. There is 1 per person limit. So if you want one, go!!

Retail is $250. Don't pay more. Buy.com has it for $230.

I'm still hesitate to get either NDS or PSP.
Aside from lack of game choices, I don't feel comfortable with the controls for NDS, and I have doubts in PSP's battery life....

So anyone's got some hands-on review on these two consoles?

OHHHH!

So that's why there were some long lines outside KayBee in the Manhattan Mall this morning. It all makes sense now!

So I had a chance to play around with it over the weekend and so far so good. The best feature of the PSP is the screen, a 16:9 widescreen (480 pixels by 272) that's just brilliant. You'll have to watch the Spiderman 2 UMD that's included to see how good this screen really is. Whether it's used for playing games, watching movies or photos, the PSP performs very well and the interface is simple and intuitive. My only complaint is that for certain situations, there is ghosting but that's par for the course with lcds.

It's a bit too big for it to be used as an mp3 player, but I use my smartphone for that. Battery life held up surprisingly well considering the size and brightness of the screen, at about 6 hours with mixed use of every feature. The headphones, while functional doesn't sound very good compared to other headsets I've used. The remote is in-line so you can use your own headphones with it.

As beautiful as the PSP's glossy finish is, it attracts an awful lot of fingerprints so you'll be wiping it constantly. No wonder they include a wiping cloth. I didn't get a chance to use the wi-fi feature and play others on-line, but the setup is pretty straight forward. I connected to the wireless router at work easily.

I only picked up one game called Ridge Racer, and it's a lot of fun. It's basically a full blown console game with all the bell and whistles, but now it's portable. With a few minor gripes, I'm very impressed with this thing. It's not too often a product lives up to it's hype, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Here's a link that compares the Nintendo DS to the Sony PSP: http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/51343/Sony_PSP_vs_Nintendo_DS.html

Whats the deal with UMDs? Are they available everywhere? Can you rent them? How expensive are they?

not yet. You can't rent them. There is a UMD recorder coming in like 2-3 months I suppose. Think they might be more common then. UMD's cost between 10-20 as a friend told me.
