Wonder what percentage of the subway/path riders use Ipod. It seems like almost 10% have an Ipod ( or white earphones atleast.

Speaking of iPods:
Am I the only one whose iPod earbuds fall out all the time in this sub-freezing weather?

Well, that black spongy thing keeps getting loose and falling off from the earphones. I think if you still have the sponge things attached to them, they should stay around the ears easier. If you don't, they are pretty slippery and won't stay around the ears regardless of the weather :( .

They fall out of my ears cold or not and with or without the foam covers.

Just got my free iPod yesterday!! Soon I'll join the "white-earbud" group in PATH. :D
Some of my friends recommended me to get this earphone instead:

It stays in your ear and supposedly blocks out most of the noises outside (which would be a nice feature if you use it on PATH).

Zipbow, congrats on your free ipod!!!
I wish I can get a free ipod.. :)
By the way, from where do you guys download music?

Call me old fashion but I prefer getting the actual CDs for my collection. It does take a lot of effort to rip them to MP3 files but they can be used unlimited unlike downloaded MP3.

I usually download mine from iTunes. It just makes sense to get it from iTunes instead of Napster (or other services) if you intend to export them to your iPod.

I had an iRiver but it broke and now I use an iPod. I much prefer it. I'm trying to sync it with MS MediaPlayer rather than iTunes but haven't worked out how to get playlists across yet. Anyone know how?

Nic, my understanding is we need to use iTunes in order to transfer the files to an ipod. Therefore, I haven't tried any other softwares. Before ipod, I used Musicmatch jukebox plus for my jukebox and it worked great. I even connected the jukebox to a media player for my home stereo.
It would be great if we can use softwares other than iTunes to transfer files to ipod.

You definitely could. There are some freewares out there that allows you to transfer files/playlists to your iPod, as well as sync news and/or weather to your iPod notes.
EphPod and iPod Agent are two of the programs I tried and liked. You can google them up.

I have the iPod photo and, I don't know if this is true for other iPods, but you can access it just like a hard drive and copy across what you like. The problem with playlists is getting the format right. I need to look into it more, but thanks for the suggestions.

I believe most of the iPods can work as a hard drive. For my 20GB iPod, I just have to check the option to enable the hard drive feature.
Right now if you buy music from iTunes, they use mp4 format. So I'm guessing they'll support m4u playlist format?

If you're a mac user, you can even boot off of the ipod with OSX.

Yes, all iPods are basically portable hard drives so you can definitely use as a storage.
I was at the Apple store in Short Hills Mall. It was unbelieveable!! iPod land!! So many accessories. I was amazed! But they all add up pretty fast. Better know what I really need otherwise I would be spending a lot of money on accessories. :p

It's much harder to complete Photo iPods.
I did regular (20GB) iPods, and after I completed an offer, I had to have 5 referrals sign up and complete an offer. It wasn't that hard, especially when you were still in school (people would do anything for a free iPod). :D
For photo iPods, you'll need 10 referrals. For iPod shuffle, you'll need 3. Not sure about mini iMac (or whatever it's called) though...

Not all sites are legit. I did some research before I signed up with that website, and got my iPod. So I'm all happy! I know two of my other friends also got theirs.
It's just that lots of people signed up but couldn't get 5 referrals. And that's where they collect their comission (through offers you and your referrals completed via their website) and make money.

http://www.freeipods.com/ is a decent site. They were even featured on a news channel sometime back.
I did signup for an offer, but wasn't sure how to get others to signup, so quit.
i think NYT promotion, or netflix promotion is good. And you could cancel anytime.

I got my ipod as a gift in August and download most songs from my own CD collection. I've only bought 3 songs from iturns. But I'm wondering how long before my battery dies completely. Has anyone visited www.ipodsdirtysecret.com yet? Apple was also featured the other night on Shame on You and they mentioned this website. Apparently once the battery dies, it cannot be replaced and Apple suggests you buy a new ipod. They have gotten a lot of bad press about it and have just lowered the prices of the ipods by about $50. It really is a pretty sleazy thing as I don't think people would be buying them so quickly if they knew they only had a shelf life of about one year!

I used http://www.freeipods.com/ (Hopefully NWA wouldn't mind the link).
The also have some sister sites which give away photo ipods and ipod shuffles (as well as LCD, handbags... etc)

You just have to send your referral link to your friend. As long as they sign up through your link and complete an offer, it will count towards your referral.
Back when I first signed up they had an eBay offer... which is by far the cheapest and best offer I've seen!

That's true. Once your battery dies, you have to replace your iPod. If you bought warranty and it's within the warranty period, you can send your iPod back and they'll replace it with a new iPod (I believe this is stated in the user manual that comes with iPod).
On the other hand, even if you use/recharge it everyday (regular use), the battery is unlikely to completely die out in 2 years. And who knows what kind of crazy products will be out there to replace iPod in 2 years....
(If your cellphone works for 2+ years and still have a decent battery life, I'm pretty sure iPod wouldn't perform much worse than that. My cousin had her iPod for almost 2 years now and it still plays roughly 8 hours a day.)
It really depends on your usage. If you constantly charge it withouth completely draining the battery, you'll significantly reduce your iPod's battery life.
Another option is to purchase extended warranty. I believe it extends your warranty period to 2 years.

This hasn't been true since the first generation iPods, and the policy has been changed since. This is old news, and you can get replacement batteries in many places. The lowering of the price had nothing to do with the impact of the press coverage. It was done to stay competitive, plus they only include a usb cable instead of firewire in the latest models. I think the success of the ipod speaks for itself.

The lowering of the price is also a result of Apple's introduction of new mini iPods. Instead of the original 4GB mini's, they now have a 6GB mini line (hence 4GB mini's are lowered to $199, whereas the 6GB ones are set at $249).
