I believe that spam software guesses user names randomly so you must have picked a common or easy to guess user ID. The tail end of the email address is probably pre-programmed in the spam software already being that hundred of thousands if not, millions of people are using this email service.

What is the tail end of the email address called anyway? I am referring to the portion that follows @? Thanks in advance. ;)

I opened an account on Gmail, and in less than a week I started receiving SPAM. How do they know so fast that a new account has been opened?

No, you misunderstood. I meant to ask what is that portion that reads @gmail.com called in the computer world? Is it a domain?

Don't think so. www.gmail.com redirects to google.
