Has anyone loaded Thunderbird and tried it? It's got a nice look & it's easy to get used to, it's a complete & competent email handler.

I have not yet gotten rid of Outlook Express however, that is the goal. The more that I de-Microsoft by PC the better I feel about myself. :D

Mozilla Foundation is the future of the Internet. Open source is definitely the new wave and it's so exciting because it's people like you and I doing all the work for Mozilla Foundation (Non-Profit). The work and the progress doesn't stop until the programmers and/or developers (you & I) say so. :D

This new open source system by Mozilla Foundation empowers the users and creates Higher Standards for a more versatile, dependable, powerful, user friendly, & all around better product that is NEVER finished. :)

One question, can Thunderbird gets mail from hotmail? That's the one and only reason I use outlook.

Anyway, speaking of open source, mozilla is not the first open sourced browser. Netscape used to be open source before Bill Gate did his dirty things and IE took over.

While we're on the email topic, I highly recommend Pop Peeper as an email notifier. It supports hotmail, yahoo (even for free accounts), gmail, mail.com, and other web based email providers.

Scott,

If you are using Outlook or Outlook Express now then you can definitely use Thunderbird, in fact all you need to do is go into your Outlook settings and jot down your Outgoing Email Server & Incoming Email Server and you are ready to set up Thunderbird. You will not miss Outlook at all, I'm sure. I especially enjoy the way Thunderbird stores contacts, it's so easy to look up names & address of your stored contacts and the rest of the set up is nicer than Outlook.

Mozilla has some kind of relationship or binding with Netscape so you are right. Open source has been their method for some time, Firefox was actually a code name for a new browser project but they did so well with it that it wasn't long before the browser began winning awards and taking away some of Bill Gates's market share.

Between Firefox & Opera, Gates has lost about 5% penetration in a very short amount of time. IE has about 95% of the market still however, with time that number will change drastically. I read that Microsoft put out a statement that they were pretty much done with IE in terms of development so it's all down hill for IE from here.

The Mozilla Foundation and others are working hard to create superlative browsers with ultimate security and nice features while Microsoft is sitting on their browser letting be the tremendous security risk that it is.

Well, tried Thunderbird yesterday. It's a nice email client but can't use hotmail with it, so I uninstalled it.

Btw, you don't have to retype the email server sittings for Thunderbird because it has an import function when you run it for the first time. It imports contacts, emails, server settings, etc directly from Outlook or Outlook express.

Awww. That's terrible Scott. Do you know why it didn't work with Hotmail? I think I used Thunderbird with MSN and had no problem? Aren't Hotmail and MSN one and the same?

No, MSN or Hotmail Premium use POP server, you can use any email clients that support pop with them. The free 250mb hotmail is web-based, the email client needs to have the hotmail protocol in order to work.

Oh, got it. Thanks for the explanation because it actually explained another issue that I was experiencing. I tried to set up the mail feat w/ Opera and it wouldn't allow it. I wondered why. I guess Opera's email is internet based as well. :D
