Is it true that Jersey City has the best and cleanest water supply in the United States? I heard via hearsay that the water comes all the way from Delaware. Can anyone confirm any of this? I don't know how one would verify info like that. :)

It might be clean in Delaware, but after it goes through all those pipes? Almost every time there's a water rupture, the city goes through brown water. Even when there's no water main break, our water runs brown for no apparent reason anyway.

Really? Even if it does, I don't think it is in my apartment. Sometimes, I get brownish water that I am always wondering whether it is safe to drink before filtration.

I have one of those Brista filters. It tastes okay once it's filtered.
If there's any problem with the water, I will know in a few years.

I also have a Brita filter and I use it when my cooking method is boiling. I used to drink from a Brita filter as well; however, I stopped and switched to a bottled water when there was a sewer breakage and it contaminated pipes in Hoboken and Jersey City last year. It was even in the news and it advised people that we should boil water at least quite a while.. (don't remember the exact time)
But Jersey water is definitely better than California water.

Hmm...hard to believe that the water here is pure. I do drink the tap water but only after I boil it first, then refrigerate it. And, as others have said, I won't even go near it when it's running brown.
Anyhow, if someone feels like checking the source/reservoir, try calling United Water. They have an office right on Warren St. (corner of Dudley, 1 block past Sussex), across from the now-closed Harbor Casino (bar), where I used to hang out.
Maybe a JC lifer can verify that I got the water company name right? Even though I looked over at the sign a million times while sitting outside the Harbor Casino, I was, after all, imbibing :p

Thanks to Juli's suggestion I was able to pull up something regarding the water in Jersey City. I guess if anyone wants to lodge a complaint about the brown water than this is the company to address your concern with...

I think the water tastes horrible! I buy bottled water.
Even my ice cubes taste awful (for obvious reasons).

I'm into Poland Springs, even make soup with it! The ice cubes are another story. Have you ever tasted a glass of water after the ice cubes melt? It tastes terrible!

I sometimes see people deliver (think it's from Poland Springs?) deliver water to tenant's door on a weekly basis. Anyone know what service it is, and how much it costs?

Thanks for the info Eric. That's gonna save me a lot of DnR water runs! :)

I used to get deliveries at my last place. It was great. When I wanted tea, I had piping hot water on standby, not a bad feat. You can also opt to buy the dispenser or rent it. I chose to rent it because if it broke down, they'd replace free of charge. ;)

Wow Matt! Point taken. Someone needs to lodge that complaint with United Water. I've never seen anything like that!

I heard that NYC has one of the cleanest waters and NJ is actually one of the dirtiest states -- with all the chemical plants here...Also I heard or read that NJ has very high (or the highest) rate of cancer.

After looking at the picture, I don't even want to use Brita filter or boil water to use tap water.
I get brownish water from time to time, but it was never that brownish.. Yuck!!!

Yes, that was the evening of July 27th at East Hapton. I think that has happened roughly 3 times in the 2.5 years I've lived here. When it does, they post signs in the lobby saying don't drink the water. :)
I've taken to keeping several days worth of drinking/cooking water in my fridge at all times so that I am prepared for the brown days.
Some of my white clothes are lightly stained from being washed on a brown-water day. :(

It tells us that how bad it would be if we drink the water..
By the way, Matt, your pet is dying.. Why don't you feed some food.. :)

You know, it's pretty interesting to read how the water we have coming through our faucets is processed before it gets into our apartments. The process sounds thorough, it's too bad that the results don't pan out.
Here's the link that discusses the filtration and flocculation process...

* There's also a Consumer Confidence Report in there for Jersey City's water that you may want to check out. :)

Also, remember that United Water isn't the sole party responsible for water quality coming out of your tap. Yes, they maintain the water mains and common lines and do the treatment, but often, issues with the water are created by the piping from the main to the faucet, which is the property owner's responsibility.

I see what you mean, I have never seen anything like that photograph by Matt. That is definitely unique to that one building or surrounding buildings.

I think that brown water only happens when they clean the pipe. I had the same problem back in Boston every now and then after the management cleaned the pipes. Just let the water run for a while and it'll clean up again.

Unfortunately, it happens after they stir the hot water tank in the building and occasionally happens as well without any reasons.

So what will be done to stop brown days all together now that we have established there is an issue?
