I think you mean a forum, not a thread - and why do you need a separate forum for Indians? Aren't we part of the general Newport Community?

And weren't you arguing for posts after posts a few days back emphasizing the feeling of how important it is to be a part of a Community?

Stan

I think what Punjabi needs is his own forum! :D

PunjabiAssassin

No? I wasn't? I was arguing for a Language forum?

Being a part of a community doesn't mean we can't have diversity. Everyone identifies with many different groups, sometimes you want to hang with the general public, sometimes with the Reds, sometimes with the Elephants, Donkeys, Greenies... sometimes with the guys, sometimes with the Indians, the Mexicans, the French! The point being, we identify with this newport community at large, and smaller groups within it, whether that be political, ethnic, social, Nic, or whatever. We should give people the opportunity to meet others who fit into a similar group. Desi is one such group, Singles are another. The concept is the same, but when I say it Admin get's anti.

I am completely against a "DESI" forum. Its bad enough that desis only hang out with other desis, but why do we need to perpetuate it online. If they like to with their own kind so much, why not move back to India or Edison!!

The whole point of these forums is to bring people together and not separate them into their own enclaves.

PunjabiAssassin

You're getting mad at Desis because they like to hang out with Desis? People feel comforable at different levels, some within their ethnic group, some at a larger level. I hope you also posted in the singles forum.

'I am completely against a "SINGLES" forum. Its bad enough that single people only hang out with other single people, but why do we need to perpetuate it online. If they like to with their own kind so much, why not go back to the pub/club/bar whereever you singles meet :)

Hey Prashant, what is the difference between a health Club forum and Desi Forum. The thing is, why couldn't those health related issues be posted in the same forum. We have seen on the older board, that there are really not that many health related talks. So, you guys have set a bad precedent by creating that forum. Why couldn't those people just post issues on the general Newport Forums?

If it were a heating issues forum, it would have been a totally different thing though :D

It is actually not the same. Singles come from everywhere, desis only come from the subcontinent and therefore excludes people who don't. One of the advantages of living and working in and around NYC is to meet people who are not like you. I would protest if someone had requested an Irish forum or a white forum or black forum.
What would you say if I said I wanted a Punjabi or Tamil forum? Where does the granulation stop?

Sonia,
Create a special forum for Punjabi so he may wallow in it.

Totally agree. On top of that, the singles forum is not limited to singles only. "single" means a period of life, married people was once single, and they could be single again with better/worst luck!

I have no problem with meeting others! Most the people I know AREN'T Desi here! So my problem would be meeting DESIS! I would like to have the ability to interact with people of my culture, does that bother you so much? Does it really effect the rest of the board to have a section for different Ethnic groups that would like to meet one another?

We should celebrate our diversity, and have forums dedicated to different groups. I would like to go into a Irish forum and discuss all things Irish, it would be FUN!

You're right that being single is a moment in ones life, and being Desi may not be --- LaMancha: Good point as always --- but it is sad to see that people here instead of enjoying our differences, like to pretend they don't exist. The general forum may be enough for you guys, but I myself like to endulge myself in all faces of my identity, whether they be permanent or temporary.

Actually it doesn't. I'll have a beer with you and play a round of gilli-danda, pool, cricket or a video game, whatever floats your boat.

Shouldn't one be friends with people for reasons other than ethnicity?

Who sets how granular a forum can get? Should we have to have a forum for irish-americans brought up in Bombay who speak fluent french? I mean if such a person exists, thats really cool and I would like to meet him/her.

More importantly you are not being banned from starting DESI threads. So grow up already.

LostinLaMancha- I don't know who you are or what your deal is, but I do know that you've made it a point to pick on every little thing that I post. Whether that denotes a particularly pathetic little life on your end, or just the tedious boredom that you feel every time you go into your burger flipping job, I just don't know - nor do I care.

If you have something meaningful to say, by all means fire away. But if you're going to continue just to pick on grammatical mistakes or spelling issues, I'm going to have to start pointing out what a whey faced little ninny you are.

Get off my back, or get a life, I don't really care which you choose.

People are friends with those they can relate to. 1 thing that relates one person to another is culture. Different customs and tradition, history and language that they may share through heritage (sp). People should be friends with other things than ethnicity (my best friend is black BTW), but ethnicity is a very strong commonality that people share and like Liverpool Fans they can feel a bond with one another. We shouldn't stop people from being friends of their ethnicity.

I don't know what granular means but I'm gonna guess detailed. We should have a forum thats granular enough where groups who have a significant following can talk about things that interest them. And in regards to the 'irish-americans brought up in Bombay who speak fluent french' if there enough of them, give them a section! I don't particularly care to have them talking about Irish pubs in Bombay in French in the general forum, so it would be convienent for everyone if they had a special section. (I would want to meet them too. :))

More importantly you are not being banned from starting DESI threads. So grow up already.

I don't know I've been writing in English or if people really don't read what I write, just post an anti comment. I never mentioned being banned ever? Its kinda hard to pretend it doesn't exist. Go right ahead and indulge in all aspects of your identity. But to impose it on others is what I have a problem with.

If i was going on and on about being punjabi in the general thread that would be an imposition. What the alternative is, is that people who want to discuss
desi things will do it in the General Forum, and that will start to create an imposition on others. Having a sperate forum stops that from ever happening.

LaMancha,

This happens in all cultures. Why I can't say exactly, but from my experience, the Indians that have attempted to hide their roots have been doing so to further their assimilation. They want to 'belong' so they sometimes act 'white'. Various names for them, White-Washed, Coconut (Brown on the outside, white on the inside) all of them that are pretty offense to them.

This isn't to say it happens often, but it does happen. An interesting study was done on Japanese immigrants. In societies that are dominated by minorities, the Japanese students were considered white. In the Bronx this happens today where some Japanese kids say their race is white! But thats more societal forces attempting to pigeon hole them. The study also showed that of all Asian women, Japanese women tended to marry out of there culture and white men at a disproprtianate rate (compared to other asian women.) WHY? I dunno.

So it happens to everyone.

DESI is from the root word DESH, which literally mean country [Bangla-desh,country of bangla people].

Desi's parallel word would be Homeboy. It is used primarily by citizens of south asian countries who are 1st generation immigrants.

Then there is ABCD, American Born Confused Desi Emmigrated From Gujurat etc.., 2nd generation people caught between 2 world views.

It does not imply a particular religious affliation and is used to categroize people from a specific region of the world.

Yeah basically, except the parallel wouldn't be homeboy  THat has a completely different conotation. And ABCD is a modification from a term the Chinese used for the Chinese Americans, American Born Chinese. The Equivilent to that for the foriegn Chinese was FOB, Fresh Off the Boat. Now us Desis have began using those terms to degrade each other. *sigh*

American Born Confused Desi Emmigrated From Gujarat is a new one that would be ABCDFG. But that also is nonsensical. If they are american born then how can they also be coming from Gujarat.? I guess that why ABCDEFG never caught on :).
