You know,
My daughter went through this program www.headsprout.com, and came out a pretty solid reader from not reading at all. Of course we ran with the program the whole way through the 80 episodes.
The way it works is you log on to www.headsprout.com and register your child. The initial registration is $100 for 40 episodes with about 3 episodes free. Each episode fuel injects phonics based reading skills in your child for about 30 minutes (roughly). The program allows you to print stories right off you printer. Needless to say, anything that comes off that printer is totally legible to your child. It's all the stuff learned and nothing more.
The program has cartoon characters never before seen. They virtual instructor has an easy breezy personality and rewards the child for every right answer. At the end of the 40 episodes you can re-register ($70) for the next 40 episode for a total of 80. The first 40 cover Reading Basics while the second set of 40 builds Reading Independence.
I found the program to be a wonderful tool for my daughter. You can register and get a couple episodes free so I would do the free trial and monitor your child to feel them out. My daughter loved it and so did we.
The program is generally for children ages 4-7. That's the a sweet spot for development in children. I think your child will enjoy it. ;)
I would urge parents to take the free trial for a test run at the least...
