Yesterday, we received the following email from Steve, announcing his candidacy for re-election to the City Council. In our opinion, it is a very smart decision, as it will give him four more years of solid experience before running for higher office. Here is a copy of the email:

I hope you all had a good weekend and I wanted to send you a quick note with respect to the political landscape for next year’s election in the City of Jersey City.
Since our upset victory in 2005, I hope you agree that we have accomplished some important objectives that we set out to achieve. In the last three years alone, our Ward E Council office has sponsored and passed more legislation to improve Jersey City than any other Council office. This includes, but is not limited to, establishing the strictest pay to play laws in the state, a lead poisoning policy that received statewide coverage, a security camera policy to improve safety throughout the City, and some of the strictest health sanitation policies in New Jersey. Furthermore, while trying to improve responsiveness and professionalism, we have successfully advocated for financial responsibility and improved educational opportunities for our children.
With an election next year for the City Council and Mayor, I am honored that in such a short period of time that there has been so much support and interest for me to run for the Office of Mayor. Our team has grown to be a group of 230 community volunteers. Simply put, this was accomplished through progressive representation of the community’s best interests—not through the politics-of-old patronage system that I believe has been a virus inflicted upon out City in years past.
Similarly, in a short four months, our election fund has raised more campaign dollars than any sitting councilmember in the State of New Jersey. This accomplishment is not about me, however, but a belief amongst residents of the City that there is great untapped potential for us to achieve excellence in the City of Jersey City.
For me, politics has never been about status, titles or public position, but about purpose. I believe that public service is important whether through a community group, in professional life, or in government. My view has never wavered regardless of the opportunities presented for bigger titles or positions. While humbled by an outpouring of support to run for higher office, I have decided to seek re-election in the community that has given me the opportunity and privilege of representing them on the Council. In
knowing what my goals were when I set out into public service I think this is the right thing to do in being true to my initial core beliefs on the reasons I entered government, as well as my responsibilities to the people I have represented on completing properly the issues that I have started as a councilman.
I thank you again for the opportunity to serve in the greatest city I have known.
Semper Fidelis, Always Faithfil.
Sincerely yours,
Steven M. Fulop
