How is the Newport gym? Good/bad points? How is the weight room - are there a lot of machines vs. freeweights?

Also, does anyone know what the membership fees are?

Yikes!

I'll use the stairs in my building. ($0 per month) no pool though.

I'm always curious to know why gym owners feel like they have to put their members on public display. Is that supposed to be some sort of motivational tactic... humiliation therapy?

Change the lighting and put up some vertical blinds for the sweat hogs already!

Imagine how people with the windows facing the all-glass gym are feeling...
I think this design is very inconsiderate of the tenants from the surrounding apartments...

You must mean the ones in the windows with high powered binoculars?

You speak from personal experience? I hope there's not a camera attached to your telescope.

:p

PS. Since the big re-do, the gym is really nice. Dumpy before, but perhaps the nicest one on the waterfront now.

My gym membership at Empire Fitness is about to end and was looking at Newport Swim & Fitness today, it seems like a nice place. They have an end of the year rate of $877 for 15 months which works out to about $58.50 a month, I think its an ok deal, Empire is $46 a month.

Any comments/reviews about the gym and cardio equipment?

That's a great deal. Also it's a good gym. Go for it! Sure beats not working out at all, right?

The gym is good. The cardio and wieght training equipment is good and mostly availalble. However the swimming pool always seems to have some classes going on or a lot of people in there. I find it hard to do agood swim there.
