Hey Sonia,
This entire 20th anniversary of Newport has gotten many of us thinking about the future.
There's information out there on the Shore Club - the planned North Tower, grocery store and the seasonal ice skating rink. Also, we know that there are plans for a tiny PA park along the Holland Tunnel tower and the completion of the waterfront walkway into Hoboken.
However, many of us are extremely curious as to what the Lefrak organization's plans are for additional development along with potential time frames. We know that market conditions and city approvals will ultimately dictate what's developed so it's unlikely Lefrak can announce anything with absolute certainty. That's okay. But we're all very interested in knowing what their current thoughts/ideas are for our neighborhood. The more we can be excited about developments to come, the more enticing it is for current residents to remain here and for Newport to attract future residents.
Would it be possible to have the Lefrak organization present their ideas for future development (which we understand may not be set in stone) in an NWA meeting? It would be amazing if they could shed light on the 3d map of Newport - http://www.newportnj.com/pdf/3d_newport.jpg.
Some questions that come to mind:
* What would they like to build next - the convention hotel or the Wilson building next to the Presidential Plazas (or something else)? Are they planning to make the Wilson building a rental?
* What mix of residential/commercial/retail would they like to see in the NE quadrant?
* Where exactly would they like to see parks built and what are some potential time frames?
* Are there plans to build additional condos beyond Shore Club?
* What are some of the constraints they're seeing regarding development of the various piers in Newport (ie the pier where the tennis/basketball court is, the pier with the heliport, the PA pier, the very large pier in the NE quadrant)?
* What's the philosophy for the architectural styles/facades of the new buildings? Will they be more contemporary like the SC or a mix of styles?
* What are their views on where they see the entire JC waterfront going and it's role with respect to other neighborhoods along the NJ "gold coast" and New York City?
* Would they be interested in feedback from residents to help make Newport even more successful?
I'm sure there are many more questions out there that we can probably compile a reasonable list on prior to the meeting so that they can come prepared. I realize this request is very idyllic but I also know that this is something that many, many people are interested in because there has been virtually no communication on this topic from the Lefrak organization.
What do you think? Is there any chance that we can get them to present some of their thoughts on the future of Newport in an NWA meeting?
Thanks!
