I'd like to thank David from Lee Decorating for the fabulous paint job he's done on our apartment. After three years, Newport tenants are entitled to a paint job, which is done free of charge by management. Newport contracts the work to Lee Decorating, but management will only paint your apartment white. You can, however, work out a deal with David for color. You provide the paint, pay a little extra, and voila! what a difference color makes. The painters took two days to color our apartment, but the end results is well worth it.
You can choose your palette at Home Depot on route 440.
Thank you David, for a job well done.

Just dont forget, you have to get the apartment painted back to white (at your own cost) when you vacate!!

TT,
Actually, that depends on the darkness of your colors. When you vacate, it's customary for the landlord to re-paint before renting to a new tenant. Light colors do not pose a problem, unlike darker shades, which take more work to remove. We used some of Ralph Lauren's lighter shades to create contrast, and it looks great!
I'm thinking of calling in House and Garden (just kidding).

Sonia,
We painted our apartment last year, and used RL paint. It cost a little more, but the colors are gorgeous. A year later, the paint still looks beautiful on our walls. Obviously, if you're going to invest your time and money into this type of project, you should get the best quality of paint.
Enjoy your "new" apartment, I bet it looks wonderful. ;)

We just moved into the Roosevelt but there are some scuffs on our wall. Anyone know the "kind" of paint that the building uses, so we can buy a small can for touch ups?
I guess we can ask maintenance...

OY,
The reminder!
I've been putting off another paint job which is getting more and more necessary. The work and chaos of getting everything into the center of the room is daunting when you have more stuff than the apartment can handle.
I've always chosen the "landlord beige" which is nice and holds up better with every new coat (must be on my third???)
Butch.
The batches differ slightly so it's hard to get a match unless you get a bottle of each (flat and semi-gloss) from the painters when they do your apartment (since you just moved in it might be tough.)
So Sonia,
The deal is that you buy your own paint from Home Depot and tjhe painters will use it? Do I have that right? Do we have to pick up the paint? (I might like a bit of color this time round.)
But OH THE AGONY of the paintjob...I pull off all the electrical plates, pull out all the nails holdiing up paintings, take off all the chrome sprayer covers, take down drapes...roll up carpets, move bookshelves, record racks, stereo equipment, lift furniture to the center of the room...GOD ALMIGHTY.
It takes the painters 4 hours to paint and ME 4 days till I've got the place back together again.
It's not for the faint of heart!

Butchcjg,
Since you just moved in, you should get the touch-up without difficulty. You can ask management, your super, or the handyman. Remember, a tip will make the handyman more likely to accommodate you whenever you need another touch-up.
Yes Lenin,
moving the furniture to the middle of the room is a tough job, so I tipped the handymen $20.00, and let them do the work. I may have to tip them another $20 to move the stuff back!
The deal is David comes to visit your apartment to see the size of the job, and schedule your paint day(s). He lets you know how much paint you will need for each room. You negotiate with him how much additional money, if any, he will need from you. Additional charges are based upon any extra time he has to spend to get the job done to your specifications. In our apartment, there was a lot of detail work because we painted the trimmings in different shades, and the rooms have at least three shades on the walls. It took two days for the painters to finish the job. However, if all you are doing is changing the color of the paint, it probably won't cost you extra.
Must say, although we were inconvenienced for two days, it was well worth it. It lifts the spirit to see the apartment with a sparkling new paint job. Love it!!

If you chose a light color, then it doesnt seem like there would be any extra work and so you might not pay more...
But, if you choose a dark color like red, blue or brown - those take a LOT of extra coats. We painted red in our last apartment and it took 4 coats to get it done!

to cover very dark colors all you need it to buy a very good primer Killz. It is a white latex primer specifically to cover wall imperfections and dark colors. It is available at Sears, is latex, and cleans up with soap and water.
It works very well both in homes and here in Newport. One coat should probably work.
