What is a good way to get rid of noises coming from the outside through the window?

I always found keeping a big box of eggs handy (for throwing) to be the best idea. Seriously. My last place was in Midtown Manhattan and my peace was wrecked by ignorant taxi and SUV drivers honking all night for no reason (even when they were at a red light and going nowhere). So in the end, I took to throwing an egg or two from the roof at the cars. Then hiding. Just made me feel better, to hear them get out of their cars and scream "who the f**k done that?". And to think of them having to make the effort to wash the egg off their windscreens!
