Nice wine tasting event tonight Renuka. It looked like everyone was having a good time tasting, and rating, the various wines. My favorite was the pinot griegio (spelled phonetically). We should do this again soon! :)

I think a good Indian Restaurant will be a great addition to the eclectic Newport area. Not sure how other people view this, but we (myself and many other friends) never had a great experience in Cafe Spice. We tried their Dinner, weekend buffet, but nothing really works for us. Their service is not up to standards and also the food is not so good :Tara.sad6

They might be a successful chain of restaurants all over the northeast, but this location to me is just bland. Have been in Newport for a long time now, but I can literally count the number of times we have been to Cafe Spice. Not worth my money. Any thoughts???

I agree with "Indian" - I have been in Newport for quite a while now and never did enjoy Cafe Spice. I like Amiya in Exchange Place, their weekend buffet is great and my guests from India had a great experience there too.

Yeah ... but it's packed all the time ... I think it's a matter of tastes. There are a lotta people who probably feel about Amiya the way you do about Cafe Spice ... so what're you gonna do ? Just pick what you like, whether its Amiya or the city or Hoboken or Edison!! :)

So you do agree that its just 'OK' :) but just want to be balanced on your thoughts, nothing wrong with that....Agree with you that it is packed all the time, and as you said it is a matter of individual taste. We sure do pick other spots when we crave for Indian cuisine. Just wanted to get some other thoughts on Cafe Spice.

Yeah, nothing wrong with comparing...if it is packed means obviously the place is serving what people like. I have nothing against Cafe Spice, but just don't go there anymore as I dislike the food there. Prices seem to be on the steep side too. Believe me, I used to be a valued customer of Cafe Spice but not in the last two years...it is all a matter of individual choice and taste.

Umm ... there are certainly a lotta dishes I do like there but then there are other dishes that I think are done FABULOUSLY at say my favorite Indian hangout in the city ... then again I like to pride myself on my cooking too! ;) So where do I draw the line ... I just go when I want some of the stuff I like there and spoil myself silly by cooking myself what I'm good at :p ... Just my 2c worth.

Actually Indian,

The food last night was good. Kudos to Cafe Spice for a well done event.

It may be a question of what you order, some things on the menu may be better than others.

True...some items on the menu turn out to be better than others.

Amiya is a great place, way better than Cafe Spice. And I love their achari aloo. And there is a reason why they are packed all the time.

I just want to throw in my two cents on Cafe Spice...Indian cuisine in general is one of my favorites. Having just moved here, I was thinking how lucky I was to have an Indian restaurant right across the street. Wow, was I wrong...I've had one sit down meal there, and 2 nights I got take out. I have to say all 3 experiences were less than desireable. I tried different entrees & appetizers on each occasion. The 2 nights of take out were particularly bad, with portions being quite small and the quality not up to par (especially considering the price which is quite steep in my opinion).

I guess I will be trekking back to my haunts on the lower east side where they really know how to make some great Indian food at bargain basement prices. Anyone who is interested I would recommend one place in particular that is so much fun to go with friends---> Panna II on 93 1st Ave between 5th & 6th. The atmosphere is incredible and very cozy (i.e. all the tables are packed in tight but it's worth it). The guys there will literally come out on the street and argue with their neighbors (another Indian restaurant) to get you in. If you like quality Indian fare and want to get your fill for around $10/person (we're talking full course here), check this place out...and BYOB if you wish as they don't serve drinks. :D

Amiya is average. Cafe Spice is garbage. Rasoi is the way to go for Indian food in JC--hands down.

I prefer India on the Hudson in Hoboken. They deliver to Newport.

Yes, they do ... they too are very good. And if you're having a party at your place, they cater very professionally too.
