My company is about to move our office to Jersey City, and I'd be moving to the area too (into a 1-bedroom). I'm not familiar with the Jersey City/Hoboken area and as I researched on the Internet I found that Newport has some nice apartment communities, at least as advertised. At the same time, ratings of these apartment communities are poor on two different websites.
May be, you, the residents, might give me some first-hand information about the apartments, so I could decide, if this is the area for me to move. In particular, I have the following questions:
1) Which apartment communities are free of mice and roaches?
2) Which apartment communities does not have thin walls (one of the major compliants I heard is being able to clearly hear the neighbors across the walls).
3) Which apartment communities have secured parking?
4) Which apartment communities have washer/drier in the units?
I appreciate all the responses. Any additional information is definitely welcome.

1) Towers of America would be a safe bet.
2) All. However, if you get nice (quiet) neighbors thin walls won't be a problem.
3) All
4) Marbella, maybe Avalon(?). Towers of America + Pacific have W/D on each floor.
5) You forgot apartment heating, it's a real problem in all of the buildings. The best solution is to get south-facing apartment. Search this board for "heating" if you want to find out more.
I think Towers of America are the nicest buildings in Newport, although some might argue that Marbella is better (however, it is considerably more expensive and its location is not as appealing).
Newport doesn't have a real feel of community, it's a pretty sterile and small place. However, it looks appealing and proximity to Path makes is very convenient. Rents have been going up pretty fast recently so the place is not as cost-effective as before.

W/D in units :
Marbella and Avalon Cove.
The Tower of Avalon which has now gone condo and is called Mandalay on the Hudson also has them in the unit and they might still be renting.
Portofino has 'em too and the mgmt office is renting out units owned individually as those are condos too.
If you find the Exchange Place PATH station closer, you might want to take a look at the Pier.
I agree with Humanoid that the ToA are good in all other respects and the staff is good too.

You could also check out the apartments at the Lincoln & Roosevelt, they are newer and much well maintained I would say compared to those on the waterfront. Only drawback is that you have to go thru the mall everyday to get to the path. It takes about 7-10 minutes.
W/D are common for all the units.

Do these 2 complexes now have 24-hour doormen? Is safety still an issue? Thanks for any info.

Just remember to take the online opinions with a grain of salt. You generally don't go online looking spread the word if a place meets or exceeds your expectations.
I'd suggest looking at how frequently people post complaints ...

You could also take a look at The Gotham (255 Warren St). 24hr dooman, w/d in each apartment, lots of windows and some units have terraces. It's 1/2 way between the Exchange Place and Grove Street PATH stations (5 minutes walk to each), one block west of the Post Office.

Hey Renuka,
No, they still don't have a 24 hour doorman, but they did have some security all night for a week maybe and that too stopped...wonder why??? I think the mgmt. should be more strict about the security issue around here.

Actually if they did that, I agree that would make the Roosevelt and Lincoln GREAT choices. Thanks for the info! (I was asking for myself) :)

Thanks to all of you for your input! Now I have my options narrowed down. Earlier, I was clueless where to begin looking for an apartment.

I believe many James Monroe units are for rent. That's in the same circle as Washington and Adams (I think). Probably cheaper rent since you dont have to go through Newport management. Good Luck.
