Nothing against the fitness center b/c I am an avid user, but just a word of caution to those of you who frequent the pool.

Usually after doing my laps, I like to sit in the whirlpool for a few minutes to relax. Last week, for several days I noticed that my throat and eyes and nose were getting irritated. Thinking maybe it was just me, I asked my girlfriend if she was experiencing the same thing, when we put it together that they were using the bottle of Soft Scrub w/ bleach (that was next to the whirlpool) to clean it. I am ALL FOR cleaning the whirlpool as often as possible, but the suds collecting along the sides of the whirlpool tell me that its not being rinsed properly enough.

My second thought here is: HELLO? CHLORINE & BLEACH DO NOT MIX. Probably not a good idea to be cleaning with bleach when people will be coming in from the pool.

Anyone else affected by this? :Tara.badi

oh you might be right. i think i was thinking ammonia... my mistake. nonetheless, it probably isnt good to be soaking in bleach, is it? im sure it had something to do with the irritated throat and nose and eyes, no? in any event, when i informed them at the front desk, they said that no one was supposed to be in the whirlpool and that it should have been covered.... people had been in the whirlpool all day...

....it probably isnt good to be soaking in bleach, is it?Well swimming pools are just very dilute bleach.

Now that you mention it though you might be on to something. Perhaps it's the pool or whirlpool that has been irritating my skin. It's very mild and I thought it was just dry skin brought on by the low humidity of winter but maybe it's not. Thanks for the heads up. I'll stay out of the whirlpool for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

I think bubbling jacuzzi's are dangerous if they are shared by hundreds of people...I've gotten sick once too often...pheumonia even. I won't go in anymore if the bubbles are on.

Think about it: an aerosolized solution of hot water chlorine, skin bacteria, athlete's foot, jock rash, whatever is on a bathing suit, and god know what else made unavoidable with every deep breath into the lungs. I think licking off the entire pool surround is probably LESS dangerous. :D

Oh, when chlorine hits organics, you get every sort of chemical melange...it's a very active oxidizer.
That's exactly how Legionaire's Disease was spread around cruise ships.

Well thanks for making me think about all that! I'll just stick with the steam room. Don't tell me how many bacteria are floating around in there - I don't want to know.

I was thinking about joining the Newport Gym for their pool... (it's hard to come by a pool in this area, as it seems). Now that it's causing skin irritation, I should probably continue to swim in my bathtub...

Hello, I just moved to Newport (East Hampton Building)...I was thinking of joining the Newport Swim & Fitness Club, mostly for regular (3-4x/week) use of the pool. Could some of you provide feedback on your experiences there? I like to swim laps for upwards of one hour at a time: is the pool big enough for a good continuous workout? And I'm just also wondering does it get really crowded and do they keep it well cleaned? Thanks for any info you guys can provide...all the best

i wrote this just as a precautionary, not to deter anyone from joining the fitness center or from using it altogether. For what it's worth, I think the fitness center is definitely worth it and I use it as much as I can.

In terms of having to compete for lanes, it all depends on what time of day you go. Sharing of lanes is not altogether uncommon, but so long as you don't mind it, no one's going to kick you out once you're in there...

Go check it out, maybe they'll let you have a free trial...
