How does that shuttle bus thing from the ferry work? I looked on New York Waterway's site, but it doesn't say where the bus goes from 38th, and how long it takes?

I believe it goes down to lexington then back along 42nd street. The bus is free and they are lined up waiting as you get off the ferry. Pretty easy and not that slow either.

Does it drive across 38th and then back across on 42, or both ways on 42?

it's goes both ways on 42nd up until the corner of 42nd & lex. you have all the routes available on their site, 42nd street specifically is:

i used to take it in the good old days when they had more departure times from newport. depending on the time of day it could take between 10 and 30 minutes (averaging at about 15). rush hour on the way back is much worse though :(

You are kidding, 10 to 30 minutes from Newport to 42 and Lex? I currenlty take the PATH to Herald Square where I jump onto the N, R or W and then take the shuttle to Grand Central. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour. I had considered taking the Ferry but was skeptical that it would be faster due to the nature of New York traffic.

it's faster in the mornings, but i found the reduced departure schedule from newport a big nuisance so i stopped taking it. otherwise, it's quite an enjoyable ride and a much more pleasant way to commute especially in the summer. once again, i wouldn't recommend it for the commute back, mainly because of traffic. i remember being stuck on the 42nd st. bus once for a little over an hour... :(

and it's 10 -- 30 minutes on the bus --> add another 10 minutes for the ferry and however long it takes you to get to the ferry terminal.
