Why don't we just delete forums which are not being used, and recreate them if need ever arises.

Parents Forum, and Kids forum are the two That I have in mind. In the about 8 weeks since this board has been online, we've had just 3 posts in one, and 2 posts in another ( and those were test posts ). Why have it when there is no demand.

Didn't see a high demand for these two on the older board either. Does any one know why these forums were created?

not to intrude on your most excellent quarrel, i'm curious as to why you're bringing in ivy league education as an indicator of one's mental capacities. my experiences have been quite the opposite, sadly, as i've found that an ivy league diploma almost certainly guarantees everything but a mind capable of processing more than one fact at a time... maybe ivy league IT is just bad, but the above-mentioned trend doesn't seem to be limited just to computer-related disciplines...

i wasn't referring just to it-related folk. i've been on a lot of interview panels lately and have been dealing with people from mainly econ and pol. sci, backgrounds -- these are disciplines that most ivy league colleges have a good track record in. i ended up hiring non-ivy league graduates (although they were graduates from top universities from other parts of the world) since the ivy leaguers seemed to spin a lot of quotes but had very little international experience, projected little personality, and all in all were substandard candidates. for me, an ivy league diploma does not guarantee a person's level of knowledge or competence in any particular subject.

I cannot speak for those fields as I have a technical background.

I went to a 'very good but not the best' undergrad school and the students were mediocre. Even the grad students were mediocre as I conducted research and worked on my first graduate degree there as well.

Then I went to 'the best' grad school and the students (and professors) were light years ahead. The drastic differences between the graduate research and course load are almost unbelievable.

An ivy league diploma is not a 'guarantee' of anything, but it does say a whole lot (in my field, anyway). Only the best of the best undergrads find spots in the programs at my graduate school. With competition like that, it does say something about the alum.

I did milk round interviews a while ago round the UK. I interviewed at Oxford, Cambridge and other good and lesser Universities. I do think the good universities tend to have intellectually stronger candidates, but I'm not so convinced that their students have disproportinately the broader skills and and values that make them effective in business or indeed in other non-academic fields of life.

Katie_Scarlett
October 6th, 2004, 10:25 AM
I find that people tend to have a chip on their shoulder about ivy graduates. If someone who is none ivy meets an ivy, the non-ivy immediately finds faults with the ivy student.

Conversely, some ivy students seem to think they're better than other people. A few bad apples spoil the whole bunch and that's what leads people disliking and finding fault with ivy students.

Fine. Let me not initate this:

Anyone insecure, pathetic, and ignorant enough to resort to this type of quote, "Unless you have an ivy league education, don't go there with me." lacks not only the education boasted about, but also the ability to substantively answer the matter at hand.

HAH. Thank-you for the laugh. A piece of paper is substance on the claim of intelligence? Substance is actually being able to intelligently contribute to a discussion.
