OK, let me get this straight.
The new turnstyles accept both PATH and MTA subway cards.
So a PATH trip either costs: $1.50 (PATH card) or $2.00 (MTA card).
It would be REALLY NICE if: 1)the turnstyles accepted the unlimited MTA cards and/or 2) unlimited PATH cards existed.

I heard that they were going to allow free transfers between the MTA & PATH if you use the MetroCard (just like they do currently for the Subway & MTA buses) - not sure when it will be implemented, though!

I've used them at the WTC station. It's $1.50 for a PATH trip or $2 for an MTA trip, on the same card. Even with a 40-trip card, you get 20% off, which is the same you get when you buy metrocard in bulk, so once they're standardized, you go to one card with no more expense.
And as far as I know, there are no plans to give free transfer. It'd be nice, but I doubt it's going to happen since PANYNJ and MTA are different entities.

It's still cheaper to use a PATH card, because PATH gives you a 20% discount, while MTA gives you a 20% bonus. You can save a nickel per ride by using a PATH card.
PATH card: Buy 40 rides for $48 (20% discount) = $1.20 per ride
MTA card: Pay $30 and get a $6 bonus (20% bonus). The card value is $36. PATH deducts $1.50 per ride from the $36 value, so you get 24 rides. So, $30 for 24 rides = $1.25 per ride.

RiverRes is right in his analysis. PATH cards are cheaper than MTA cards for those turnstiles. MTA cards are more like a facility that is being offered.
I had wondered why they did not have unlimited PATH cards, but the reason I found out was that they 1) did not have enough demand 2) they did not feel it was needed for a system for this size ( Just a few stops, with only a few destinations).
Unlimited Metrocards would complicate funds transfer between the two associations MTA and PANYNJ

Saw this thread, decided to add my opinion. The design of the screens is annoying, instead of displaying # of trips left on the card in large font, they display huge arrow and write "You have X trips left" in tiny white letters on light green background. Who came up w/ that design?!
The metrocard compatibility only adds a little convenience and almost doesn't make any sense.

Why doesn't metrocard compatibility make sense? Its excellent for less frequent travellers specially new yorkers, who won;t have to bother with multiple cards. You can get the ~17% percent discount by just spending 10 dollars instead of $15 or $24. And it makes for a better more modern looking turnstile, which can be programmed more easily than the earlier one.
agree the fonts could be larger, but besides that, there shouldn't probably be other compaints. because this in no way is any inferior that what you had.
Or are you Punjabi?

Correct, it adds very little convenience for those of us on this side of the river. However, it's a very nice convenience for those living on the other side. When my friends come over to visit, one of their biggest complaints is having to buy a separate PATH card. They had always wished they could simply use their MetroCard...now they can.

New turnstiles are wider so now you can go freely with a bag on your side.
Small white fonts on light green are really annoying :)

That's a nice benefit for some, but maybe the turnstiles are wider in order to accomodate the growing girth of the population... :p

Until they install the new turnstyles at 33rd Street, I will still have to buy both cards.

Shouldn't take very long. I'd predict another 2-3 months. They have already installed it on the 14th st station. Would probably take one city station out of service over the weekends ( like they did with the 14th st one ) and install them.

Actually, it is cheaper to use the bulk PATH card than it would be to use the MTA card. RiverRes has it correct. To put it another way, I figured out how many trips you get with the same amount of money spent. That amount would be $240.
For $240 you can get either 5 forty trip PATH cards ($48 each) or 6 $40 refills (Plus the $8 bonus)
PATH
for $240...40 trips per card X 5 Cards = 200 Trips
MTA
for $240...$40 refill plus $8 bonus at $1.50 per trip = 32 trips
32 trips X 6 refills = 192 Trips
So, I guess in the long run it would be cheaper to keep getting the PATH card.

News Release - Teacher Arrested:
At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule and a calculator.
At a morning press conference, Attorney General John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'there are 3 sides to every triangle'."
When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes."

So, I guess in the long run it would be cheaper to keep getting the PATH card.
I'm confused, are they charging $1.5 a trip if you're using Metrocard? Someone mentioned $2 earlier...

the PATH fare is 1.5 bucks for a trip, so if you use a per trip metrocard, 1.5 dollars will be deducted for everytime you use your metrocard.

not sure if its just different or a less natural motion using the new turnstyle
seems like with the old ones you could sort of keep on walking and the card was in a natural position to grab
with the new system you have to stop and wait for it
nip picking ....i know
