View Full Version : Heating Question

I read a lot of posts addressing outrageously high electrical bills when using built-in heaters. Will it be more efficient to unplug the wall units and use your own oil space heater? Another question: will the electric system hold up 1500Watts?

Have you used stand-alone space heaters? What was the difference in electrical bills (built-in and stand alone)? Is there a heater you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for replies.

I posted something of similar nature last week (see post titled: Space Heater). From other posts on the old site, some people said that they used a space heater and had lower costs (and a warmer apt). I hate the built-in units in the apt and would prefer to use a space heater just because it will be much quieter. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to use a 1500 watt heater...

Thanks for reply. I'm asking about 1500W b/c when I lived in Brooklyn sometimes our electricity shut off when a lot of appliances were turned on (toaster and microwave, I believe). 1500W is quite large power so I thought that it could not hold up... They could also put low limits on electrical system to avoid people use their own heaters.

Does anyone know what the BTU or the electrical wattage of the ac/heater units in the apartments are ?

If it's more than 1500 watts then there shouldn't be any problems in plugging the space heaters in.

I don't think there would be a problem (electricity wise) in plugging these heaters in with other appliances on or running.

Heater/AC is connected to special outlet. It could be on another, stronger electrical circuit.
