If you have one of the maintenance guys in your building in to fix a drain that's running slow, do you tip them when they're finished (even though you always give them a tip at the end of the year), or do you consider that part of what they're paid to do and don't tip them?

And if you do tip for something like that, how much?

Thanks.

I just wait and give a good holiday bonus.

usually 2 dollars... more if they are especially helpful and spend a lot of time fixing stuff. I also leave a holiday bonus once a year.

I only tip if they're doing some handiwork for me, such as hanging a painting or mirror. If it's work related to the apartment, I don't tip until the holidays, when I give a substantial gratuity. ;)

Yeah I don't tip if it is a repair that has to be done in my apartment.

I have been calculating my overall Christmas budget and would like to know what most people give the doormen, maintenance, etc.

I thought this year for Christmas management was going to try to collect money from all the tenants in the same building and then spilt the total among the staff of that building. This way everyone makes the same amount for their bonus. I think if they do try this, it is not going to work just for the fact that there are some hard workers that deserve good bonuses and then there are the "slackers" who do not deserve the same as the hard workers. But that is just my opinion!

I don't have a problem contributing to the bonus for all of the maintenance and staff but I will certainly give a little extra to certain doormen.
