With winter approaching, I would like to buy a space heater for my one bedroom apartment so I can avoid using the crappy heaters in our apts. Any recommendations?

I have two Delonghi oil filled heaters and they work pretty well. They were about $40 a year ago. I am thinking of getting a third one for my one bedroom apartment, though. I still had to use the apartment heaters as well, but my bill wasn't as much as I have seen other post on this board.

Hope this helps.

Isn't it a violation of your lease to have your own heating units?

It is at the Marbella.

I don't recall reading that in my lease.

Hey Floridian, how big is your one bedroom? Are you saying you need 3 oil heaters and the wall unit to heat up your place?!

My Place is 700 Square feet. I want to get a third heater so I don't have to run the apartment heaters so much. The oil filled heaters are a lot cheaper to run than the apartment unit. Also, being from Florida, I like it really warm in my place.

My apartment is also about 700 square feet. The apartment heaters are so loud and like you, floridian, i like my apartment warm. I'll report back if I find one that doesn't require using the apt heaters.

I would like to get a space heater as well but am hesitant. I once saw a space heater burst in flames. They definitely cannot be left unattended.

Demiking, are you talking about oil heater or space heater with flame? I hope the oil heater is not such dangerous. I have been using the oil heaters for a while now but have no problem. I hope not.

Has any one had experience with the Vornado electric heaters.
How effective are they?
How much do they add on to your electric bill?

I have heard that convection heaters are the best to use - the ones that look like mini-radiators. I bought one (Kenwood) and it works well in the bedroom. Still trying to figure out how well it works in the living room.

Does anyone know what kind electricity bills one gets with a heater like this...?

1500W = 1.5KWH.

12hrs/day = 18KWh = $1.8/day = $54
18hrs/day = 27KWh = $2.7/day = $81
(assuming 10Cents per KWh... I don't remember how much PSEG really charges)

I don't know if this calculation is correct. Anybody has any comments?

Assuming this is correct, this will be a great electricity bill considering I paid $550 last January for a 2 bedroom!

Will a heater this kind do for a standard Newport size bedroom or do we need to run the wall units also, which spoils the whole purpose for buying something like this.

The heaters in my 2 bed in Riverside look as if they are rated at 3kW each. January 2004 prices were 8.1cents/kWH so, burning all three heaters on maximum, 24 hours a day would have cost:

9kW * $0.081 * 24hours * 31days = $542

So you must have your heaters on full blast the whole month to get a $550 bill.

I think that power is gonna cost a lot more this coming January. Even in September the price is already up 25% to 10.8cents per kWH.

No I think I used to run 2 heaters for about 15 hrs/day and another heater for about 4 or 5 hours per day, but i have other appliances as well.

So can the heaters posted on this thread replace the wall units effectively? As they seem to rated at half as much as the wall units?

I just bought a Bioaire convection heater and man it's the worst heater I ever used! It has a very stupid "auto turn off" function which makes the heater turns itself off every 10 mins! I'm returning it.

You all don't need space heaters... just turn on your ovens, open the door and the room will get warmer.

***THAT's a JOKE!! Don't really do that. You can burn down your apt, affixiate or any number of other bad things can happen.

He he..

I like that idea except I would continously cook stuff and have endless parties.
Invite the floor, they'll bring booze and other smoking paraphernalia ;) .
The winter will fade away very quickly.

Someone on the George Washington building the other day and tried to heat their apartment with the stove and started a fire. It seems all the plastic bowls, etc they stored under the stove started burning.
