View Full Version : What We Need

Someone posted on the old board asking for opinions re: what's missing in Newport.
I voted for a Panera and a Trader Joe's.
What else do we need (besides an adult video store, as someone else suggested)?
A Barnes & Noble would be nice, too.

I think we've got pretty much everything nearby - and what isn't in Newport is in manhattan. A Trader Joe's would be useful, but I have one near where I work.
What I would REALLY like is a Marks & Spencers. And an Arsenal sports store. And a decent Turkish kebab house, or a chip shop.

Fresh Direct or some other internet home delivery grocery service.

definitely fresh direct! in fact, demiking posted a link on the old board a while back to send fresh direct requests and suggestions for expanding their service.
i suppose there's no chance of getting neiman marcus at the mall... *sigh*

I'm surprised a Blockbuster or some larger movie rental place hasn't leased out space yet. The space by the charter school would be absolutely perfect for something like that. They have within a 5 minute walk, thousands of people!
And as stated before...I'd like to see a Trader Joe's.

i remember getting a survey from management a while ago on precisely which stores we'd like to see in the mall... i wonder what happened to the results of that, and if it's actually influencing the mall's line-up. jcrew, br, and h&m were listed, as were aix and a few others that were almost ok... anyone knows what happened to this?

We need a pub with jukebox, pool table and dart board. Dorrians is great, but a place with a dart board/pool table will make it much easier to meet our neighbours.

Neiman Marcus. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! That's a good one. :D
But seriously, I recall filling out that survey too. Instead of J Crew or Banana Republic, we did get that lovely furniture store (ahem) in the old Victoria's Secret location. Palace at Versailles anyone?
In driving back from A&P and Target the other day, just before crossing the lanes entering the Holland Tunnel (still on the Hoboken side), we passed a huge vacant piece of land that would be big enough for a Barnes and Noble and a parking lot (which, I recall from discussions on the old board, is a requirement of B&N's once they're outside of Manhattan). I guess the homeless shelter one block down the road would probably turn them off though....
Ok, Newport waterfront may not be big enough for a Barnes and Noble, but surely a Blockbuster would fit nicely somewhere and still turn a decent profit?

oh, yes, thank's for reminding me of the beautiful furniture store :) i get a kick just watching the people inside seriously browsing the furniture and actually bying items... i haven't seen something as tacky as that place in years. that's too much even for our mall...

There's a giant Barnes & Noble in Hoboken on Washington between Observer and Newark.

I agree! Maybe Dorrians can put up some dartboards and pool tables.

Oh but, Kate, that Barnes and Noble is tiny compared to any average store of theirs. :(
There's definitely enough space around for them or Borders to open, but I think one of the two chains also looks at demographics when deciding where to locate (including the number of people with college degrees), and the stats for Jersey City were not up to snuff for whichever of the two companies that it was...

there's that tiny bookshop in the mall which is an affiliate of borders, maybe they figure they've met our demand by 4,5 rows of books...

Oh yep. How can there NOT be a Blockbuster underneath the school? Perfect size, perfect location.
If there wasn't that little no food restriction sign, a mini Citerella would work there as well. The prices can be higher than Stop and Shop, as long as the fruits and vegetables are fresher.

I know Blockbuster closed a store on Kennedy Blvd last year.
Anything will be better than that ghetto deli-MINUS store. I don't know how tha store is profitable.

1) I would love to have Trader Joe, Whole Foods or Citarella (Citarella has the some of the best Jamon Serrano/Proscuito I've tasted).
2) Circuit City/Comp USA/Best Buy
3) Any decent clothing store for men (I like Gap, but I definitely would like to have more choice... Banana Republic or better).
4) I am not crazy about Blockbuster idea; Hopefully, once we get Comcast, Movie-on-Demand service would help with watching movies on an impulse. As for selection, there is always Netflix/Walmart. I hear rumors swirling around partnership between Netflix and Tivo (Netflix will deliver movies through your TiVo; that will be something).

Surely this is not true because the Barnes and Noble in Hoboken has no parking lot (just pay lots near the terminal).

Are you kidding? That is the smallest B&N I've ever been to, by a long shot!

The bookshop in the Mall is quite small, but it seems quite well stocked and the staff are friendly. Not quite B&N it's true, but not a bad also ran.
