If you pay the membership fee in one lump sum why would you have to pay $99 on top of the annual membership? When I spoke with someone from sales, she said that there is a $149 initial fee and then $67/mo. When I asked about the annual lump sum, she told me it was $99 plus $720. Is that her commission?

I wonder why they charge a initiation fee? I have paid that fees before, and I have always wondered if that is the fee for the session you have when you have your initiation to the gym with the instructor. I wonder if that is the case, you can get that fee waived by asking not to have that session

i've always had the initiation fee waived. i'm not a big fan of the newport gym at all, i took out a trial pass a while ago and found the classes extremely crowded and not really inspiring. there's a nysc gym off of exchange place, and a few decent boxing gyms in hoboken...

It's unfortunate that Newport Fitness doesn't offer better facilities for the money, but the proximity is the reason I joined. I probably wouldn't go if I had to take a car or Path to get to a gym. The pool is so ghetto. Might as well as swim in the Hudson.

Now I fancy a swim in the Hudson. I've not seen anyone doing it, though, so I have mixed feelings. I don't want to end up on Staten Island five days later, bloated and blue. Or catch Weil's Disease.

The pool however ghetto it might be is better than the pool of NYHRC that I once was a member of in New York. That pool was ghetto. The water used to be dirty, and the pool was much smaller. The height of the ceilings for the room in which the pool was, was barely 8 feet.

newport pool is way superior than that.

NYHRC = New York Health and Racquet Club. I was a member of the one on 56th between 6th and 7th

Yeah, NYHRC would have cost me $129 a month and that's with company discount. I heard you can use the 2 gyms that are Newport Fitness Center affiliates in Manhattan for up to 5 times a month for free. Maybe those facilities are better?

Take the lightrail. It's actually a nice ride. ;)

that's not the worst part. once they (*#&@( locked me in the *(#@(& pool. i was in the pool for like maybe half hr, by the time i got out the lifeguard is gone and they locked the door to the weight/pool room. luckily after 15 mins of flashing the lights in the weight room and banging on the door, someone finally came and open it for me.

now i am traumatized for life!! will never go near the newport pool again!

ps: sadly this is a true story

There seems to be much construction in progress around the gym. Are they renovating? By what date are they planning to complete the work?
