I have a friend who has a car with NY plate and will be moving into the neighborhood by the end of the year. His concern is if he kept his NY licence and registration (saving on insurrance), will he be able to get an on-street parking permit?

I know that you cannot get an on-street permit in Hoboken with out-of-state registration. You used to be able to pay MUCH more (like 10-20X the in-state rate), but I think they did away with that, too.
I imagine that it's the same elsewhere?

In Hoboken, with out of state plates, you can get a "visitor's permit." www.hobokeni.com
If the address that your friend is going to live at isn't a Hoboken address, then he is ineligible for anything more than 3 days at a time (@ $3 a day, I believe). If your friend is moving to Hoboken, it's $30 for 30 business days worth of parking.

I believe Jersey City requires you to submit a copy of your license and registration in order to get a parking permit. I am not sure if it will impact getting a permit, but if I were to guess, I'd probably think it would.

i've seen plenty of cars with out-of-state plates parked in resident-only parking spots, so i suppose there is a way. have you asked your doorman? my doormen are usually veeeeery helpful and tend to know tidbits like this.

Resident spots are completely different!
My vehicle is not registered in NJ and I park in a Newport parking garage.
City parking permits are very different than privately-owned spaces.

I just asked a friend who had experience with this particular situation. He had Florida plates, registration, etc. He had to go every day to the Heights to get a daily parking permit. That's right, every day. You can only do that for 30 days. However, he said that there are some blocks downtown that do not have 2 hour parking restrictions. IF Newport does not have that 2 hour parking restriction then your friend will have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think he's gonna get a space in the garage, then get an on-street permit (if he can) for other area that has the 2 hrs restriction.
