There was a great opportunity thursday night I think it was. Because of the cloud cover the lights penetrating them made a very nice effect. My the time I came down to take the picture, they had already turned them off.

I hope someone got it though.... it was an amazing picture moment...

I have some pictures I took but I'm not sure how I can attach them to the reply since the system says that the limit is 2MB.

This isn't a particularly good or amazing picture, but below is one I took from within my apartment. Or, click here (http://www.overloaded.net/gallery/ny-nj/IMG_0725) to go to my gallery, which has the high-res version and others.

Thanks guys :)

A tripod comes really handy for this kind of situations.

Very nice gallery Matt... I downloaded the time-lapse video of downtown. Where did you set up equipment to get the shot?

Just curious... Did you ever see "Baraka"?

I own perhaps 10 DVDs, and Baraka is one of them. I have a projector, and watching it with wall-sized images is great. :)

The camera was simply sitting on a tripid in my bedroom. Most of the pictures in the gallery were taken there.

The video was made with a normal digital camera (Canon S400). The camera included PC software to take photos regularly. All I had to do was hook the camera up to the computer with a USB cable and set it to take a picture ever 15 seconds or so.

When it was done, I used a linux program called mencoder to convert the many JPG files into a movie. I'm sure it can be done in Windows too, but I knew how to use the Linux software so I did it there.

Baraka is awesome. I lost my copy - anyone know a local place where I can buy another copy?

Didn't get a chance to take many good pictures this time, but here are a few good pictures that I took last year (and a few bad ones too, since I went there right after work, and didn't have a tripod with me):

And in case anyone is interested, here are some pictures of the Twin Towers themselves:

What is Baraka?

BTW, Hkmax, stunning picture of the Towers of Light.

What is Baraka?

Baraka is an artsy film. Search Amazon or Netflix for the DVD... There is no plot, just music and stunning scenery. The reason it was brought up is that there are lots of time-lapse shots in it. It may not be for everyone, but if you have Netflix I highly recommend checking it out.

I just added it to my NetFlix queue after reading about it here, and then watching a few stills from the film on sites that Google brought up!

Sort of like Koyaanisqatsi, I suppose, - which is better? Koyaanisqatsi is top drawer.

Somewhat related, although it's a documentary, when it comes to awesomeness I really like the BBC's The Blue Planet.

Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka are 'related' via Ron Fricke, writer on one, and director on the other. Nice to see a similar idea developed over two different movies (along the growth lines of Inaritu in Amores Perros and 21 Grams). In a similar category, I found Russian Ark quite compelling.

Koyaanisqatsi is the original and hence rates very high in my opinion (Soundtrack by Philip Glass also adds to this work). Ron Fricke was the cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi and he directed "Baraka" a decade later.

Even though, I know that Koyaanisqatsi perhaps deserves more artistic merit, I somehow still prefer Baraka for one particular sequence (somewhere between 40th and 45th minute, when he intersperses different shots - chickens in an assembly line, manhattan traffic among others; I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't watched it yet, so i won't leave my interpretation of that sequence here).

Since we are talking about movies, another one of my favorite (and quite different from Baraka) is the documentary "42 up" (and the others in the series) by Michael Apted.

And Matt, I envy you... It has been a while since I saw Baraka on the big screen... I own the DVD, but watching on my 27" TV is definitely not as awe-inspiring as watching it on a big screen.

I love love love the chicken assembly line sequence! And the Manhattan traffic assembly line analogy. Perhaps we should discuss the movie in another thread at some point? Instead of Book of the Month, we can have DVD of the Month and allow everyone time to watch the DVD in advance and to participate in discussion.

What do you think?

Perhaps we could have block viewings? Your place or mine?

We could always show it at the Marbella theater.

The seats there are so cushiony and nice!

I would be interested in watching Baraka on big screen... I have the DVD, but don't have access to a big screen as I live in the presidential plaza. DVD of the month sounds like a great idea, but then I am a big fan of movies!

There is a cinema in the Marbella, I'm sure we could book it for a showing if someone is prepared to provide the DVD. The cinema is for residents and guests, I'm not sure if there is an upper limit on how many guests, have to check.

As for number of guests, I highly doubt that it matters.

But technically speaking, the lease states that 3 guests may accompany each resident.

I hope the logistics work out... Regardless, I'd be more than happy to provide the DVD.

I could hang a sheet up on my window then use the projector and rear-project it there for all to see. :)

Interesting!!! I thought the beams were 2 huge beams of light, but from one of your pictures, it seems that each 'beam' is made up of like 10 different lights! I always wondered how big one of those lamps must be to produce such amount of light.... thanks Prashant!

Bakara eh? I've never even heard of it. Sound interesting, is it more like a artistic documentary?

And I LOVE the DVD of the month idea, we'll actually have something fun to talk about for once :)

Actually, each "tower" of light is made up of 44 searchlights laid out in a square shaped perimeter with each side made up of 11 of those searchlights!
